Norwegians, Scots and Israelis seize the advantage, while parity remains for Slovan Bratislava and Celje.
FK Bodo Glimt moved a significant step closer to the Champions League league phase after securing a commanding 3-1 victory away at NEC Nijmegen in the first leg of their final qualifying round. The Norwegian champions established a firm grip on the tie during a dominant first half, and although NEC found a late response, they face a daunting task to overturn the deficit in the return leg.
NEC Nijmegen: The Dutch side struggled to live with the tempo from the outset, trailing by two at the interval. Their search for a way back into the contest proved fruitless for much of the second half as they conceded a third, but Clement Bischoff struck late on to provide a vital lifeline for the return fixture.
FK Bodo Glimt: A masterclass in efficiency saw the visitors ruthlessly exploit their openings. Sondre Brunstad Fet and an Andreas Helmersen penalty put them in the driving seat before half-time, with Haitam Aleesami further extending the lead after the restart. Armed with a two-goal cushion, the Norwegians are now firm favourites to secure their spot in the competition proper.
Elsewhere, Celtic are on the verge of ending a two-year absence from the Champions League after cruising to a 3-0 win over LASK. Meanwhile, the tie between Slovan Bratislava and Celje remains on a knife-edge following a 1-1 draw. In the evening’s other clash, Hapoel Beer Sheva showed great character to come from behind and defeat Sabah 2-1, handing the Israeli side a slender lead for the second leg.
