Victim of racist abuse following the UEFA Super Cup, Mathys Tel can count on the firm support of Tottenham, who have issued a statement on the matter and will work to sanction those responsible.
Tottenham condemn the abuse received on social media by striker Mathys Tel following the London club’s defeat on penalties against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, a match in which the Frenchman missed his penalty.
Tel, aged 20, took responsibility for taking a penalty in the decisive shootout, a move the club praised as demonstrating “bravery and courage,” against aggressors described as “cowards” for hiding behind “anonymous profiles and usernames” to spread “abject remarks.”
The club assured that it would work in coordination with authorities and social media platforms to “take the strongest possible action” against anyone identified as responsible for these racist attacks.
“Tottenham stand with Mathys,” concludes the club’s statement, which reiterated their commitment to combating all forms of discrimination.
