Mikel Merino’s stoppage-time winner earned Spain a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portugal, sending La Roja through to the World Cup quarter-finals while bringing Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of lifting the trophy to an end in what proved to be his final appearance at the tournament.
The eagerly anticipated showdown lived up to expectations, with both sides producing the evenly contested encounter many had predicted from the opening whistle.
Spain and Portugal battled for control throughout a fiercely competitive first half, trading dangerous attacks without either side managing to find the breakthrough. Wasteful finishing at one end and outstanding goalkeeping at the other ensured the deadlock remained intact heading into the interval.
Spain came closest inside the opening eight minutes when Dani Olmo’s perfectly weighted through ball sent Mikel Oyarzabal clean through on goal. However, the striker dragged his low effort narrowly wide of the far post with only Diogo Costa to beat.
Portugal responded soon afterwards as Bruno Fernandes slipped Cristiano Ronaldo into the penalty area, but Unai Simon reacted sharply to push the veteran forward’s powerful drive away from his near post.
Costa then produced arguably the save of the half with a superb double stop to keep Portugal level. The goalkeeper first denied Lamine Yamal’s curling effort towards the far corner before springing back to prevent Alex Baena from turning home the rebound.
Simon matched his opposite number moments later with a brilliant double save of his own. The Spain goalkeeper first kept out Joao Felix’s close-range header before smothering Ronaldo’s acrobatic follow-up after the Portuguese captain had pounced on the loose ball.
The best opportunity of the first half arrived just before the break when Nuno Mendes unleashed a fierce strike from the edge of the area. The effort took a deflection off Pedro Porro before crashing against the crossbar and bouncing to safety.
Portugal suffered a major setback shortly after the restart as Nuno Mendes was forced off with what appeared to be a muscle injury sustained during a sprint with Lamine Yamal.
The second half failed to match the intensity of the first, with clear-cut chances becoming increasingly scarce as the tempo dropped and both teams struggled to carve each other open.
Just as extra time seemed inevitable, Mikel Merino proved the difference after coming off the bench. The Arsenal midfielder latched onto Ferran Torres’ sublime half-turn pass inside the box before calmly guiding a low finish beyond Costa at his near post deep into stoppage time.
Merino’s late winner secured Spain’s place in the quarter-finals while bringing Portugal’s campaign to a heartbreaking end. It also marked the final World Cup appearance of Cristiano Ronaldo, whose illustrious international career concluded without adding the sport’s biggest prize to his remarkable collection.
