Roberto Martinez is expected to leave his role as Portugal head coach following the 2026 World Cup, according to reports from talkSPORT.
The Spanish coach, whose contract expires at the end of the tournament, has reportedly decided not to renew his deal and will leave the role regardless of Portugal’s performance in North America.
Martinez took charge in January 2023 following Fernando Santos’ departure and has overseen a talented generation led by Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, Rafael Leao, Vitinha and Joao Neves.
The report claims the 52-year-old is keen to return to club football after a decade in the international game. Before managing Belgium and Portugal, Martinez enjoyed spells at Swansea, Wigan Athletic and Everton, winning the FA Cup with Wigan in 2013.
For now, his focus remains firmly on the World Cup, where Portugal are among the contenders and will be aiming to lift the trophy for the first time in their history.
