
UEFA have granted Barcelona’s request to play their opening Champions League match away from home. According to Catalunya Radio, the club have been given the green light to buy themselves more time to prepare their stadium, whether that be Spotify Camp Nou or Montjuic.
Barcelona are in a race against time to get their stadium ready for the new season. In a new turn of events, UEFA are offering a helping hand by accepting the condition that Hansi Flick’s side begin their Champions League campaign away from home.
Catalunya Radio reports that the governing body has given its approval to allow the club more time to prepare their stadium. It remains to be seen whether they will play their home matches in the continent’s premier competition at Spotify Camp Nou or Montjuic.
The agreement with the Barcelona City Council allows the Catalan club to use the Lluis Companys stadium until the end of February. Should their main stadium not obtain the necessary permits by then, the agreement could be extended.
Barcelona will not play at home until 14 September, when they host Valencia in their fourth La Liga match. Javier Tebas assured them that all their matches in August would be played away from home. They started against Mallorca and still have to visit Levante and Rayo Vallecano.
