Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Italy international Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, with the midfielder becoming one of the club’s marquee arrivals ahead of the new season. The transfer remains subject to the granting of a work permit.
The 26-year-old joins Spurs after two years on Tyneside, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders.
Since arriving from AC Milan in 2023, Tonali made 110 appearances, scored 10 goals and helped Newcastle end a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by lifting the 2025 Carabao Cup.
Tottenham coach Roberto De Zerbi is understood to have played a decisive role in the move. Speaking after the transfer was announced, Tonali revealed that a lengthy conversation with his compatriot convinced him that north London was the right destination.
“I’m very happy to be here. When I arrived at the club today, it felt fantastic. People said there were four or five clubs interested, but for me there was only one,” he said. “I spoke to the coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham.”
Tonali arrives in north London with an impressive pedigree, having won the Serie A title with AC Milan and earned more than 30 caps for Italy.
He also admitted he has long admired Tottenham’s atmosphere, adding: “I’ve played against Tottenham a few times and always found a great atmosphere created by great fans. I can’t wait to start the season.”
Spurs will now hope the experienced midfielder can become a cornerstone of De Zerbi’s new project.
