Strasbourg forward Emanuel Emegha receives a one-match ban after claiming he thought the club was German before signing.
Strasbourg have announced a one-match suspension for forward Emanuel Emegha, ruling him out of their upcoming match against Toulouse. The club stated that disciplinary action was taken due to a failure to uphold club values and standards.
A club statement announced: “Racing Strasbourg have decided to suspend Emanuel Emegha for the upcoming Ligue 1 match on Saturday, December 6th. Racing reaffirms its commitment to the essential principles of exemplary conduct and respect for the collective framework. Emanuel remains an important player for our team, who has always given his all for the club on the pitch. He will rejoin the squad after this match.”
‘L’Equipe’ has revealed the reason for his punishment. In an interview published on November 16th in ‘Algemeen Dagblad’, the player claimed that before signing for the French club in the summer of 2023, he believed it was based in Germany.
Journalist Andres Onrubia reported that the comments were ill-received by Marc Keller, Strasbourg’s president, given his origins in the Alsace region. This territory, in northeastern France, has historically been a contested area between France and Germany for centuries.
Further compounding the issue, Emegha recently stated that his team struggled against Monaco or PSG when he was not playing. These remarks serve as a warning to the Dutch international, for whom a move to Chelsea in 2026 was reported in September. This represents a significant blow for Strasbourg, as the forward has scored 7 goals and 2 assists in 11 matches this season.
