Middlesbrough have reportedly identified Steven Gerrard as one of their prime candidates in the hunt for a successor to Rob Edwards.
Chairman Steve Gibson is said to be a long-time admirer of the Liverpool legend, recognising Gerrard’s experience, leadership qualities and high-level playing career as ideal attributes to guide the club.
Gerrard, 45, has been out of management since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January 2025, but his name is increasingly linked with opportunities in England, and Middlesbrough appear keen to make a move.
Discussions are understood to be in the preliminary stages, with the former Liverpool captain weighing up the challenge of returning to management after a short break.
Should Gerrard take the role, it would mark a high-profile return to English football for the former England international, potentially energising both the squad and the fanbase ahead of the 2026 campaign.
