Porto surprised everyone by announcing the signing of Luuk de Jong during the squad presentation and before playing against Atletico. The striker got dressed and took to the pitch, although he was not called up.
Dutch international striker Luuk de Jong was announced as Porto’s new signing on Sunday in a surprise move. He arrives on a free transfer after his contract with PSV expired and has signed for one season, with an option for another.
Without prior notice, the name of De Jong, 34, was announced to Porto fans during the presentation of the squad for the new season, held in the run-up to the Portuguese team’s friendly match against Atletico Madrid.
He has spent most of his career at Eindhoven, first from 2014 to 2019 and then from 2022 to the present, winning the Eredivisie five times, most recently last season.
He also spent two seasons at Sevilla, where he was the hero of the Europa League victory in the 2019-2020 season with a brace in the final against Inter Milan (3-2), and one at Barcelona, on loan from the Andalusian club.
Twente, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Newcastle were other teams he played for.
