Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, a target for Arsenal, gave an interview to RNE where he talked, among other things, about a possible call from Xabi Alonso for Real Madrid. The midfielder made it very clear that the Basque coach is his idol.
Zubimendi is one of those players who hasn’t yet defined his future. The midfielder, who seems further away from staying at Real Sociedad with each passing day, was questioned about this during the interview with RNE, which shared an excerpt featuring the Spanish international.
“There are options, but it looks like it’s going to be a different and long summer. I don’t know how it will end,” began the San Sebastian native, who counts both Arsenal and Real Madrid among his admirers.
Although the Gunners appear to have a slight edge, the player was asked what he would do if Xabi Alonso called him.
“He’s always been my idol. I was lucky to be coached by him during a very important year. I don’t like to talk about those scenarios. It would be disrespectful to answer while I’m with the national team,” Zubimendi said openly, having worked with Alonso in the Real Sociedad B squad during the 2019/20 season.
Regarding Arsenal, the player made it clear there’s nothing settled with the London club. The midfielder explained that he posted some photos on a beach a couple of weeks ago when rumours claimed he was about to join the Gunners. “I did that to make it clear those rumours weren’t true,” he concluded.
