The Treasury Committee, tasked with scrutinising UK tax authority HMRC, has called on the body to examine the tax implications of Manchester City’s financial irregularities.
The committee has called on JP Marks, First Permanent Secretary of HMRC, to investigate these tax implications, demanding assurances that the department fully grasps the magnitude of the case and the pressing questions arising from it.
“This request includes establishing whether HMRC is aware of the investigation and whether it has sought a copy of the report. We also ask for an overview of HMRC’s work regarding the taxation of remuneration and any other potential tax evasion within football clubs,” the Treasury Committee stated in a letter addressed to the British Parliament.
According to the findings of the investigation and the verdict reached by the Premier League and the independent commission handling the case, Manchester City inflated their figures for almost a decade, misrepresenting accounts to the tune of more than €1 billion.
