LaLiga president Javier Tebas insists Gianni Infantino must step down following the failed attempt to sell World Cup stakes to private investors, while savaging Real Madrid for their criticism of the CVC project.
Javier Tebas has insisted that his FIFA counterpart, Gianni Infantino, should resign following his failed attempt to establish a subsidiary to commercialise the Mundial. Furthermore, the LaLiga chief took aim at Real Madrid’s response to the debacle, after the club drew parallels between FIFA’s move and the Spanish top flight’s deal with private equity fund CVC.
Taking to social media over the weekend, the LaLiga president reacted to FIFA’s U-turn on selling a 20% stake in FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) — a new subsidiary designed to manage the organisation’s commercial operations — by launching a scathing broadside against its leader.
“Infantino’s position is untenable. FIFA scrapping its proposal to privatise its competitions is welcome news, but it would be a grave mistake to think this resolves the governance crisis. Confederations, associations, leagues, and players should not settle for this withdrawal and consider the matter closed. The rot runs much deeper,” he asserted.
“Have we already forgotten the blue card debacle following political interference? The investigation opened by the US Congress, which has summoned Infantino over allegations of serious misconduct? The dropping of charges in historic FIFA corruption cases? The scandalous World Cup ticket prices? The unilateral decisions regarding the international calendar and new formats, forced through without any genuine dialogue or agreement with stakeholders?” he asked.
Consequently, he stressed that the organisation’s core problem is its centralised “governance model”, demanding a modern “new leadership” that “restores institutional credibility and ensures future decisions are built on consensus,” rather than “impositions”.
“Withdrawing a proposal does not erase what has happened. It is merely the tip of the iceberg,” he concluded.
