Key Athletic figure Nico Williams has returned to training, all smiles on his return to the Basque club following a second consecutive summer of speculation linking him with Barcelona.
Nico Williams has rejoined Athletic. After a summer – the second in succession – where he came close to signing for Barcelona, the Navarre winger, however, ultimately signed a contract extension with the Basque club.
The Spanish international was among the first arrivals at Lezama on Monday to begin pre-season training. Aware that all eyes were on him, he was his customary smiling self.
Athletic’s players began their pre-season preparations on 9 July, but Spain internationals – Unai Simon, Dani Vivian and Nico Williams – as well as Maroan Sannadi, were granted a delayed return.
Nico is once again set to be a pivotal figure for an Athletic side returning to Champions League football this season. Notably, he will do so at home, alongside his brother, in what promises to be a historic year at San Mames.
