“I feel shame and sorrow” – Real Sociedad coach hits out at Anderlecht ultras

Imanol was angry after the Anderlecht ultras caused terror at the Reale Arena. He described the incidents as sad and shameful and gave his opinion on the outcome of the match. “I’m not the one to stop it, especially without knowing what happened. Obviously, if our fans were in danger, it should have been stopped,” he said.

Real Sociedad coach Imanol Alguacil, after the incidents provoked by the Belgian ultras in the match against Anderlecht, came out to condemn what happened, and described it as “sad and shameful”, as well as being a serious issue that has to be dealt with in some way.

Asked at a press conference whether the team considered stopping the match, Alguacil was frank: “I’m not one to stop the game, especially without knowing what happened. Obviously, if our fans were in danger, I understand that it should have been stopped.

“I feel shame and sorrow. I am aware that today many people didn’t come to watch the game out of fear. We were warned and I don’t know by whom, but they have to stop selling tickets to these people”, the coach stressed emphatically.

As for the match, the ‘Txuri-urdin’ coach said that the team didn’t play their best game. “The goal conceded hurt us a lot, and from there there were several situations in which we felt like out of the game”, he commented.

Concerned about the performance of some of his players for “not having enjoyed the game at all”, Alguacil said he was happy with the team’s reaction in the second half, although he acknowledged that “then the team let themselves get carried away”.

For their part, Real Sociedad condemned the “new aggression” suffered by their fans and requested a meeting with UEFA so that these despicable acts are the last that the team will have to suffer on their own pitch.
