“Pau Victor? The door to the first team is open”

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick opened the door to Pau Victor and the young academy players for the first team after ‘El Clasico’ win in New York.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick praised Pau Victor after Saturday’s friendly win over Real Madrid and left the door to the first team open for both the striker and other youngsters in the squad who can make space for themselves.

“We’ll see (if Pau Victor will stay in the first team this year), but two games and three goals is not bad…” he said with a smile at a press conference.

“He knows how to score goals and that’s also good for a striker so we’ll see what happens. It’s the same for every player: the door is always open for the first team,” he added.

Pau Victor, who had already scored a goal against Manchester City this week, scored both Barcelona’s goals in a 2-1 win over Madrid in a friendly in the New York metropolitan area that was suspended for more than an hour because of a storm. The striker was also voted man of the match in both matches.

Flick made his debut with a win on the ‘Cules’ bench in a ‘El Clasico’, but stressed that the most important thing in these friendlies is to see the team grow and apply the ideas they have been working on.

“It’s a ‘El Clasico’ and for everyone it’s a big game, it’s a great thing to play against Real Madrid, also for us as coaches. But we are in pre-season and what we want to see is development,” he argued.

On that note, the coach felt there was an improvement on the game against Manchester City. “It’s very good to see that. We are compact, a unit, we defended well. But in the end it’s ‘Barcelona style’ when we have the ball. It’s really good to see what the players are doing with the ball,” he explained.
