Former Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare dies at the age of 60

The England coach, who was 60 years old and had been part of the Foxes’ discipline in recent times as an assistant, had been diagnosed with cancer and has lost a long battle with the disease.

English football mourns the death of Craig Shakespeare, who was assistant to Claudio Ranieri in the season of the miraculous Premier League triumph and then took over as head coach after the Italian manager’s departure.

Craig Shakespeare, who was 60, was diagnosed with cancer a year ago and has been unable to overcome the illness. He held a number of roles at the King Power Stadium outfit and was also on the coaching staffs of Hull City, Watford, Aston Villa, Norwich and Everton.

“Craig passed away this morning surrounded by his family. While we are immensely proud of his achievements as a player and manager, to us, his family, he will always be a loving husband, father, son, brother and uncle,” the manager’s family posted via the LMA (League Managers’ Association).

Meanwhile, Leicester labelled Shakespeare an “inspirational figure for others in the club’s history”: “Craig was instrumental in our rise from League One to the Premier League title, before taking charge of the team and reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Rest in peace, ‘Shakey'”.
